Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial
Viña Real Gran Reserva is a wine from Rioja Alavesa made with grapes from our own vineyards located between 500 and 650 m altitude. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and aging in French and American oak barrels for 24 months, followed by 3 years in bottle. It has a garnet color, spicy and ripe fruit aromas, and a full, fleshy flavor with fresh acidity, ideal for a long evolution in the bottle.
Characteristics of the vineyard
Viña Real the wine has traditionally been made with grapes from Laguardia and Elciego, our own vineyards such as San Ginés and Castejones, to which in recent years we have added grapes from our own vineyards in Labastida.
All of them are small plots, located between 500 and 650 m altitude, mainly calcareous clay soils, although there are also sandy soils, goblet-trained, located on hillsides and facing south.
Winemaking characteristics
Wine made from the selection of the best grapes from our own plots located in Rioja Alavesa and harvested by hand.
After a cold pre-fermentation maceration for 24 hours, the alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts and controlled temperature between 28º and 30ºC.
Both the filling of the tanks for alcoholic fermentation and the filling of the barrels is carried out by gravity.
The wine is aged in new, single-use barrels for an average of 24 months, with manual racking approximately every 4 months in the first year, with racking being spaced out in the second year. Before bottling, the wine is clarified to obtain greater clarity, silkiness and brightness. In the bottle the wine acquires the necessary roundness for a minimum of 3 years. It will reach its greatest fullness many years later.
Harvest data
The 2016 vintage was characterized by the good weather that accompanied it and by the increase in production expectations after a cycle marked by drought and high summer temperatures. In general, the weather favored the correct evolution of the vegetative state of the vineyard and the absence of significant pests or diseases, which allowed the health status of the grapes to be excellent until the end of the harvest.
At Viña Real, the grapes were harvested from October 5 to 25, with some delay compared to previous years.
Tasting notes
Lively and bright ruby-red color with light garnet rim and high color layer. Very intense and complex on the nose, highlighting notes corresponding to its time in barrel (coffee, spices, toast, balsamic) well combined with aromas of ripe red and black fruits and nuts. The entry on the palate is very smooth, unctuous, evolving towards an intense, structured and long-lasting finish with a certain acidity that gives it freshness. A sweet tannin, very well tamed and perfectly integrated in the final matrix of the wine, can be appreciated at all times. It is a wine that will evolve very positively in the bottle, showing great cellaring potential.
Food pairing, red meats, cured cheeses and oily fish.
