Characteristics of the vineyard

Wine made with our own grapes from our Carromaza estate (2.37 hectares) located in Villalba, in the municipality of Rioja Alta. The highest part of the vineyard is at an altitude of 555 meters above sea level and descends to 530 meters.

The climate is of Atlantic influence, windy and with risk of frost, but this specific estate is located in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria, being well protected.

The vineyard is cultivated on trellises to protect it from the wind. It is a rainfed vineyard with soil poor in organic matter, but its calcareous clay composition retains the water and nutrients necessary for the grapes to ripen well.

The vineyard faces south and annual rainfall in this region is around 500 mm.

Winemaking characteristics

The grapes are harvested by hand, in small 300 kg pallets that are kept in a refrigerated trailer at 10ºC until they are quickly transferred to the winery, which is only 5 km away.

The grapes are selected twice, first in the vineyard and again on arrival at the winery. Cold maceration of the whole grapes, which the following day are semi-crushed and by gravity we fill a small vat of 5 year old French oak. The yeast is autochthonous, we pump over daily and after the alcoholic fermentation the wine continues macerating for a few days, the date of devatting is determined by the tastings, the fermentation temperature ranges between 28-29ºC.

Once devatted, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels. After the malolactic fermentation, at the beginning of December, the wine was racked into new barrels and one wine barrels.

Harvest data

The weather during the 2021 growing season was irregular. The summer began very dry, but the September rains in this area were decisive for a very positive evolution.

Specifically in our Carromaza estate, located in an altitude and aerated area, the grapes improved notably with the help of these rains. Perfect weather during the month of October, with sunny, bright days followed by very cold nights, led to slow ripening.

Healthy, well-balanced grapes, ripe tannins and good acidity allowed us to produce this great wine with good cellaring potential.

The harvest at the Carromaza estate takes place between October 13 and 14.
