A Villeira
A Villeira Mencía is a wine from the A Villeira estate, located at 700 m altitude with decomposed granite soils and centenary terraces. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in 500-liter barrels with whole clusters and indigenous yeast, followed by 12 months of aging in the same barrels. It has a cherry red color, with floral and mineral aromas, and is fresh in the mouth, with good acidity and persistent.
Characteristics of the vineyard
Our Finca A Villeira is located in LAS ERMITAS, near Valbuxán, in the northernmost area of Valdeorras where the Bibei river separates it from our neighboring Ribeira Sacra. It has an east orientation at 700 m. altitude. It has an approximate area of 0.4 hectares, planted in 1958 in more than a dozen centenary stone terraces and granite walls. The soil is sand formed by decomposed granite, poor and shallow.
The orography of the land only allows the soil to be worked manually or with animals.
Sustainable viticulture is carried out.
Winemaking characteristics
Manual harvest in 15 kg boxes, grape selection and fermentation in six 500 liter second year barrels with whole clusters. We manually remove the stems as fermentation takes place.
Fermentation with indigenous yeast.
Aging in the same barrels where it ferments for 12 months.
Harvest data
In Val do Bibei the 2020 harvest has been the earliest since we arrived. The fruit was harvested in the third week of September, characterized by a rainy and cold winter and a summer with warm temperatures during the day but cool at night due to the altitude of As Ermitas (750 mtrs.), causing a good and early alcoholic and phenolic ripening of the grapes, being a healthy, balanced, fresh and very aromatic harvest.
More generous in yields than 2019 due to the fact that we did not suffer any inclement weather during the summer.
Tasting notes
