Characteristics of the vineyard

Viña Real Reserva is made mainly with grapes from our own vineyards in Rioja Alavesa. The grapes come mainly from the towns of Laguardia and Elciego. Other neighboring municipalities have participated for decades in the composition of this wine. They are small plots, sometimes terraced, unirrigated vineyards over 30 years old and goblet-trained plantations. The soils are mostly calcareous clay, poor in organic matter, with small yields and different orientations.

Winemaking characteristics

Selection of grapes, harvested by hand. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks that are filled by gravity with the help of a bridge crane.

The fermentation temperature is maintained between 28º and 30ºC.

Pumping-over and delestages take place during fermentation, with tastings determining the ideal moment for devatting, which is also carried out by gravity into concrete tanks.

Aging is carried out in new, single-use barrels for an average of 18 months, with manual racking approximately every 4 months during the first year.

Before bottling, the wine is clarified to obtain greater clarity, silkiness and brightness. In the bottle the wine acquires the roundness in which it will reach its greatest fullness before being put on the market.

Harvest data

The 2017 vintage in Rioja Alavesa was marked by the effects of the April frost, as well as the drought, but, although limited in volume it showed great diversity of wines. The region reported the earliest vintage in recent history, being one of the scarcest, however, with excellent quality. Concentrated wines of great aromatic intensity, with great structure, body and color. Good vegetation management, impeccable grape quality and good viticulture control were fundamental in achieving these results.

The harvest began on September 12 and ended on September 30, making it the earliest vintage harvested at this winery since its beginnings.

Tasting notes

Intense cherry red color with violet hues.

Complex nose, where the spicy aromas of oak, vanilla, are mixed with hints of Tempranillo varietal, floral, red fruits, blackberry and ripe fruit at the end of the mouth. In the mouth it is a warm, ample and long wine, with adequate acidity and noble tannin. It is a complex wine, long in the mouth, fleshy and with great potential for aging in the bottle.

Its structured body augurs a long life in adequate storage conditions.

Food pairing: All types of meats and oily fish.
