Viña Real Reserve
Viña Real Reserva is a wine from Rioja Alavesa made with grapes from vineyards over 30 years old, planted in calcareous clay soils. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and aging in new and single-use barrels for 18 months. It has a cherry red color, spicy and fruity aromas, and a warm and complex flavor, ideal for pairing with fatty meats and fish.
Characteristics of the vineyard
Viña Real Reserva is made mainly with grapes from our own vineyards in Rioja Alavesa. The grapes come mainly from the towns of Laguardia and Elciego. Other neighboring municipalities have participated for decades in the composition of this wine. They are small plots, sometimes terraced, unirrigated vineyards over 30 years old and goblet-trained plantations. The soils are mostly calcareous clay, poor in organic matter, with small yields and different orientations.
Winemaking characteristics
Selection of grapes, harvested by hand. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks that are filled by gravity with the help of a bridge crane.
The fermentation temperature is maintained between 28º and 30ºC.
Pumping-over and delestages take place during fermentation, with tastings determining the ideal moment for devatting, which is also carried out by gravity into concrete tanks.
Aging is carried out in new, single-use barrels for an average of 18 months, with manual racking approximately every 4 months during the first year.
Before bottling, the wine is clarified to obtain greater clarity, silkiness and brightness. In the bottle the wine acquires the roundness in which it will reach its greatest fullness before being put on the market.
Harvest data
The harvest at Viña Real began on September 23 and ended on October 12, slightly ahead of the average due to the low yields.
The vegetative state of the vineyard was very good in terms of health due to good weather conditions throughout the cycle. Temperature fluctuations and small rainfall during flowering and fruit set caused a low rate of fruit set, which reduced the quantity of grapes, resulting in small, loose and not very compact bunches, a moderate harvest in terms of quantity, very healthy and of excellent quality.
Tasting notes
High garnet color, clean and bright.
The nose is very intense where the aromas are intertwined showing a great complexity worthy of this wine. We find aromas of forest fruits, licorice, spices, cloves, pepper, balsamic notes, roasted coffee, etc. In the mouth it presents concentration, but with round and friendly tannin, leaving a long and pleasant aftertaste with fruity notes. All this results in an extremely elegant wine with its own personality. A wine with a long finish that will evolve very positively in the bottle as we predict a long aging potential.
Pairing: All types of meat and oily fish.
