Characteristics of the vineyard
This wine comes from a single estate in the San Cristóbal plot in Labastida, a vineyard of more than 40 years old. The vineyard is called La Virgen, 2 hectares in the municipality of Labastida (Rioja Alavesa). It is a plot with clayey soil and pebbles on the surface. The vineyard is located on the slopes of Mount Toloño, protected from the north winds and is exposed to the south. Given the proximity to the mountains, the months of August and September are warm and bright during the day, with temperatures dropping at night so that ripening is slow, preserving the natural acidity of the grapes.
Winemaking characteristics
The grapes are harvested by hand, in small pallets of 300 kgs. which are kept in a refrigerated trailer at 10ºC until they are quickly transferred to the winery.
The grapes are selected twice, first in the vineyard and again on arrival at the winery. Cold maceration of the whole grapes, which the next day are semi-crushed and we fill a small truncated cone-shaped tank with a capacity of 11,000 liters. The yeast is autochthonous, soft pumping over and after the alcoholic fermentation the wine continues macerating for a few days, the date of devatting is determined by the tastings, the fermentation temperature ranges between 27-29ºC.
Once devatted, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. After malolactic fermentation, in early December, the wine was racked into new and single-vineyard barrels.
The wine was aged for 12 months in barrels. 30% new, the rest one wine. French.
Harvest data
The 2021 growing season in Rioja Alavesa began with good rainfall which we were able to take advantage of in our "La Virgen" estate, a vineyard at altitude located in the municipality of Labastida where the clay soils and the proximity of the Sierra de Toloño are determining factors in maintaining the humidity and freshness necessary for the good development of the vineyard.
The ripening of the grapes in this 2-hectare plot was slow and staggered due to the temperature differences between night and day, respecting the grapes' own acidity and a perfect state of health.
The grapes were harvested by hand on October 11 and 12. The age and low yields of this vineyard are also factors that contribute to the quality of the grapes and the balance of all their parameters, facilitating the production of a high quality wine that reflects the expression of Tempranillo and the terroir.
Tasting notes
High cherry red cherry color with violet hues.
The nose presents a high aromatic complexity with notes of fresh fruit, mainly hints of berries such as blueberries, blackberries, currants, typical of Tempranillo. All this wrapped in subtle spicy and balsamic notes from its barrel aging.
Great harmony in the mouth, where it is powerful yet balanced, with round and silky tannins that show the extraordinary quality of the plot that gives its name to this wine.
