Characteristics of the vineyard
Harvested by hand in our vineyards around the San Rafael estate. Grapes from San Gregorio, a Graciano vineyard (3.7 ha) planted in 1979, with characteristic clay-limestone soil. This gives this variety full maturity while preserving its characteristic acidity.
Winemaking characteristics
Manual selection in the field and on the selection table in the winery, thus guaranteeing maximum quality. The main objective in this vinification process is to preserve the characteristics of the variety. Alcoholic fermentation in 100 Hl French oak vats at a moderate temperature to ensure good color extraction. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in pure concrete for one month before being transferred to 100% French oak barrels for second use. It remains there for 2 years until bottling.
Harvest data
The 2020 vintage was an early harvest, where climate change is a visible fact and was noticeable. Early, with a very interesting ripening and marked by high yields in the vineyard.
One fact to take into account was the high rainfall, with above-average values. In the dates prior to and during the harvest, there were episodes of rain, which hindered the harvest dates.
This season was characterized by moderate temperatures throughout the entire cycle. This allowed for careful control of each stage and played a very important role in softening the vintage. The selection of high quality grapes was very easy due to the good sanitary condition of the harvest. This made the 2020 vintage a special vintage of quality and fluidity.
The graciano grapes were harvested at the estate on September 22, 2020.
Tasting notes
Graciano 2020 is characterized by the expression of the variety in a difficult vintage. On the nose, we find notes of black fruit, characteristic of the warmth of the vintage. Intense aromas of black plum and heather blossom stand out against a mineral and balsamic background, with hints of chocolate and tobacco.
On the palate, oily with pleasant and balanced acidity. Accompanying notes characteristic of the variety, we find aromatic herbs such as rosemary in retronasal. All this, together with a finish enveloped by silky tannins that remind us of its barrel aging period, make the wine long and pleasant to drink.
