Maruxa Mencia
Maruxa Mencía is a wine from small vineyards in Éntoma with diverse soils, grown at altitudes of 350 to 800 meters. Made with manual harvest, cold maceration and fermentation in tanks without barrels, it seeks to express primary aromas and a fruit more blue than black. It has a cherry red color, intense nose of fresh red fruit and mineral notes, with a broad, fresh and persistent mouthfeel.
Vineyard Characteristics
The grapes come from suppliers who cultivate small plots in the village of Éntoma, each distinguished by its soil type and location.
The earliest-ripening plots are those in Val do Galir, as they are further south (350 meters) and the slate soil promotes early ripening due to the reflective effect; they also have the most mineral character and the best pH levels.
The remaining plots are located on north-facing slopes above the Sil River, ranging from 600 meters to 800 meters in elevation; these are the latest-ripening and coolest, with a more floral profile and lower yields, as well as the richest mix of grape varieties.
Although we rely on suppliers to access very old vineyards, we manage them technically ourselves to determine the harvest date based on the desired wine style and to avoid overripening, since the Sil Valley is quite warm.
We seek fruit with more blue notes than black ones.
Winemaking Characteristics
Hand-harvested into 15-kg crates. Maceration of the grapes in crates in a refrigerated room and in tanks for 48 hours prior to alcoholic fermentation.
The grapes are destemmed but not crushed to enhance primary aromas.
Fermentation in small stainless steel tanks.
Vintage Information
Following a winter of moderate temperatures and rainfall, spring passed without late frosts and with slightly above-average rainfall.
The 2024 harvest began in the first week of September, about a week later than in the previous two vintages. This slight delay was due to the absence of heat stress episodes during the summer.
It can be described as a “cool” harvest, marked by slow ripening thanks to cool nights and days with moderate temperatures, far from the usual heat waves. These conditions allowed for harvesting with great precision at the optimal moment, preserving vibrant acidity.
A fresh, aromatic vintage with depth on the palate, reminiscent of the great vintages of the late 1990s.
