Characteristics of the vineyard

The grapes for Cune Gran Reserva 2017 come from our own vineyards, mainly from Torremontalbo, with 70 hectares of vines about 45 years old, facing south and east, clayey and stony soils, continental Atlantic climate with about 500 l/m2 of annual rainfall.

Winemaking characteristics

The grapes for the production of Cune Gran Reserva 2017 were selected and harvested by hand. During vatting, a 24h cold maceration was carried out before alcoholic fermentation, using own yeasts and which was developed in small stainless steel and concrete tanks alternating different types of pumping over. After fermentation, the wine continued maceration with the skins for a few days, during which time we carried out tastings to determine the ideal moment for devatting. Malolactic fermentation took place in concrete tanks and after aging for 24 months in American and French oak barrels, the wine was clarified and bottled, remaining at least 3 years in our cellars in the best humidity and temperature conditions.

Harvest data

The 2017 harvest began in Haro on September 2 ending on October 6.

We started the cycle with higher temperatures than usual, which caused an advance of the vegetative cycle. This advance, which also affected sprouting, was decisive for the frost suffered at the end of April to greatly affect a production that had already been depleted by the drought.

At the end of July, occasional storms helped to complete the vegetative balance, improving production expectations. The continental climate with the usual low nighttime temperatures in Haro helped to avoid over-ripening and to obtain a quality crop. Frequent ripening controls were also decisive for harvesting the grapes at the optimum moment and maintaining the freshness typical of the wines of the area.

It is worth mentioning that the vegetative cycle of the harvest was not as short as one might think because of the early harvest date, due to the early bud break.

Tasting notes

Bright cherry red color.

The nose presents good aromatic intensity with aromas of red fruits such as strawberries, cherries, and currants, also the licorice typical of the tempranillo variety is very present. The aromas from the barrel aging appear very well assembled discovering sweet spices with roasted coffee and notes of Mediterranean forest.

In its passage through the palate shows a softness and kindness that gives us a length with an aftertaste of balsamic and fruity notes. It is a round wine, with a silky tannin that allows us a very versatile pairing due to its balance.

Ideal pairing for all types of Mediterranean dishes.

Serving temperature 18ºC.
