Characteristics of the vineyard
The grapes for Contino Garnacha come from the San Gregorio Encina (vineyard planted between 1976-1982) and Viña Laserna (planted in 2016) plots. Both plots with an altitude of 420 and 400 meters respectively. Both soils are clay-limestone, with medium-high stoniness.
Winemaking characteristics
The Grenache was harvested by hand in 200 kg pallets on September 26. At this moment, phenolic and alcoholic maturity were ideal for the elaboration of this Contino Garnacha 2021. After selection in the field and on the selection table on arrival at the winery, the wine is placed in a French oak vat. Here it undergoes a pre-fermentation maceration until fermentation begins spontaneously. After eight days, alcoholic fermentation comes to an end. But the Grenache remains in the vat for 15 more days. This gives the wine finesse and balance. After this time, the wine is transferred to an Austrian wooden foudre, Stockinger, of 2000 liters and 12 semi-new barrels of 500 liters where it remains for 10 months. After this, it is aged and refined in a concrete tank for 4 months.
Harvest data
The 2021 harvest was marked by inclement weather during the month of June. An episode of hail on June 14 resulted in a decrease in production, due to the phenological state of our vines at that time, fruit set. Similarly, June was a month of intense rainfall, with reserves of 120 liters of water being collected in one month.
Our Grenache plots, thanks to their water retention capacity, stored water reserves to counteract the stress suffered during the month of August.
During the ripening months, the temperature gradually increased, bringing with it a stable and favorable ripening for our vineyards and their quality.
Tasting notes
Contino Garnacha is a fruity and very elegant wine, with delicate notes of undergrowth and balsamic herbs, fruit of the special terroir of Finca San Rafael. The palate is ample, mineral and saline. With excellent acidity, silky tannins and very well integrated, making it a balanced and fresh wine.
