Bakeder is a township red wine that reflects with purity the character of Laguardia, in Rioja Alavesa. Made from 100% Tempranillo, it stands out for its intense expression of red and black fruit, with elegant spicy and cocoa notes. In the mouth it is ample, balanced and of great finesse, with fleshy tannins and a long persistence. A deep, modern wine that seduces with its freshness, elegance and personality.

Characteristics of the vineyard

A selection from our two estates in Laguardia, San Ginés and Castejones, with a total surface area of 8.78 hectares. Vinification is carried out in our winery Viña Real, also in Laguardia.

The average age of the vineyard is about 30 years, with an altitude between 550 and 600 meters. The soils, mostly clay-limestone, are poor and with limited water availability. The vines are trained in goblet and cordon-royat trellises. South facing, protected from the cold north winds by the Sierra de Cantabria. Classic Alava terraces, open to the southern sun.

Winemaking characteristics

Double grape selection, both in the vineyard and on arrival at the winery. Manual harvest in 300 kg pallets that are kept in a refrigerated trailer at 10 °C until they are quickly transferred to the winery.

Once there, the grapes are placed in small truncated cone-shaped tanks, where they undergo a cold pre-fermentation maceration for about 48 hours at 10 °C, to enhance the extraction of fruit aromas.

Alcoholic fermentation is carried out at a controlled temperature between 27 and 29 °C, followed by hot maceration for several days at the end of fermentation. Tastings determine the optimum moment for devatting; in this vintage, the wine remained in contact with the skins for 15 days. The malolactic fermentation takes place in concrete tanks before being transferred to French oak barrels where it remains for 10 months until clarification and bottling.

Harvest data

The 2022 harvest was about ten days earlier than in 2021 and almost two weeks earlier than the historical average. The vegetative cycle was marked by intense heat and persistent drought, conditions that reduced yields - fewer clusters and smaller berries - but made it possible to obtain grapes in impeccable health.

In this context, ripening monitoring and grape tasting were key tools in deciding the precise timing of the harvest, preserving the primary aromas, vibrant acidity and fresh character of the wine.

The vineyards destined for Bakeder were harvested by hand on September 20 and 21, during the third week of the month, under optimal conditions.

Tasting notes

High purple-red color with violet hues that denote its youth.

The nose presents high aromatic intensity with fresh red and black fruit (raspberry, currants, blackberries...) and licorice, all enveloped by a fine and subtle wood with light balsamic, spicy and cocoa notes. In the mouth it is a complex, full-bodied wine with a broad entry, volume, fine and fleshy tannins and long persistence in the aftertaste.

A wine that perfectly expresses the terroir of Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa), as it must have been to drink a Viña Real in the 1920s, before beginning its very long aging in wood.

Recommended serving temperature 18ºC.
