Bakeder

75cl bottle - 2020

Bakeder is a wine from Rioja Alavesa, made with grapes from 30-year-old vineyards harvested by hand. After careful fermentation and 10 months in French oak barrels, the wine stands out for its cherry red color, intense aromas of fresh fruit and spices, and a full-bodied mouth, structure and long persistence. Ideal for pairing with meats, stews, cured cheeses and desserts.

Characteristics of the vineyard

Selection in our own vineyards San Ginés and Castejones in the municipality of Laguardia, where our winery Viña Real is located and where we make this wine. The estates have a total surface area of 8.78 hectares.

The average age of these vineyards is approximately 30 years and they are located at an altitude between 550 - 600 meters. The soils are mainly calcareous clayey soils, poor in organic matter and with moderate water availability.

These vineyards are trained in goblet and cordon royat. Classic Alavesa terraces, facing south.

Winemaking characteristics

The grapes are selected and harvested by hand. Once in the winery, the grapes are unloaded into small stainless steel tanks where a cold pre-fermentation maceration takes place for 48 hours at 10ºC to enhance the extraction of fruit aromas.

Alcoholic fermentation is then carried out at a controlled temperature of 28-30ºC, after which hot maceration is extended for a few days at the end of fermentation and tastings determine the moment of devatting. This year the wine was kept in contact with the skins for 17 days.

The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in concrete tanks and is then transferred to French oak barrels where it remains for 10 months until it is clarified and bottled.

Harvest data

The year 2020 has been a "difficult" year for winemakers. In addition to adverse weather conditions, such as the hail-storm in June, the uncertainty generated by covid-19 has been added this year.

In general, the 2020 campaign presented a reduced harvest in some localities of the Rioja Alavesa region, due to hail and water falling at certain times during flowering, but the resulting grapes entered the winery with exceptional quality and health, with good expectations for obtaining aromatic wines, with great freshness and very positive organoleptic qualities.

Bakeder was harvested in the first week of October.

Tasting notes

High cherry red color with violet iridescences that denote its youth.

The nose presents high aromatic intensity, highlighting varietal notes of Tempranillo, mainly fresh red fruit, hints of black fruits (raspberry, currants, wild berries) and licorice, along with light balsamic and spicy touches from its time in oak barrels.

In the mouth it is a full-bodied and structured wine that presents a broad entry, with volume, fine and fleshy tannins and long persistence in the aftertaste.

It must have been like drinking a Viña Real in the 1920s, before beginning its very long aging in oak.

A wine that perfectly expresses the terroir of Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa).

Perfect companion of game meats, spicy or with sauces. Also with stews and cured cheeses. Desserts also pair very well, even this wine is perfect for tasting alone.

Serving temperature 18ºC.
