Monopole Rioja
Monopole Rioja is made with grapes from selected vineyards in Rioja Alta, harvested by hand. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine matures in contact with fine lees, providing freshness and complexity. It is a fresh and aromatic white wine, ideal for pairing with fish and seafood.
Characteristics of the vineyard
White wine made from the Viura grape variety from our own vineyards and those of our regular suppliers located in Rioja Alta. The soils are clay loam, fresh soils, bush vines. All the work is done by hand, including the harvest.
Winemaking characteristics
When the grapes arrive at the winery we carry out an 8-hour maceration with the skins at a temperature of 10-12ºC.
After this time, the grapes go to a small pneumatic press where we obtain the free-run juice by gravity before pressing. We do a static racking using only physical means. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, with the aim of extracting and preserving the primary aromas, fruity and floral, typical of the variety.
Harvest data
The 2023 campaign has been complicated throughout the cycle from the climatological point of view, ending with a very intense harvest in terms of work both in the vineyard and in the winery.
After a rather dry winter, we had some early bud break. Rainfall was also scarce in the spring, although storms at the beginning of the summer and mild temperatures in June and July eased the situation somewhat and the vines had a short-lived respite.
Several heat waves in August, with daytime temperatures exceeding 40ºC and nighttime temperatures higher than usual for those dates, set off the alarm bells again. The situation did not improve with the heavy rainfall during the first half of September, which caused us to fear for the health of the grapes.
In Rioja Alta, where there were still days left to reach ripening, the greatest challenge was to be able to wait for the plant to assimilate the water and to achieve a balance between technological ripening and phenolic ripening by monitoring each plot on a daily basis.
In Haro, the white grape harvest began on September 13 and ended on October 7.
Finally, the grapes ripened well and were in good health; it was a good vintage for the production of white wines.
