IN MARCH THERE ARE OTHER GRAPES AND THEY ARE IN MONTENEGRO
Not all wine is made from Tempranillo, Garnacha or Albariño grapes. Spain, the country with the largest area of vineyards in the world, is rich in native varieties. From the Canary Islands to Gerona, and from Pontevedra to Mallorca, all the civilizations that passed through here, Romans, Persians or Muslims, left a rich wine-growing heritage that has survived to the present day. At Montenegro, the distributor of CVNE responsible for finding signature wines all over the world, we have selected for March a batch of three wonderful Spanish wines made from small-grown grapes that produce great wines. May you enjoy them.

CHOLO 2023
ZONE: PDO RIBEIRO
VARIETY: LOUREIRA
Like so many other varieties grown in Galicia, the Loureiro variety is a descendant of some Central European grapes introduced by the religious orders along the Camino de Santiago. Traditionally a minor player in the production of Albariño wines in which it was used as a blend, in recent years it has taken on the importance it deserves for its fresh acidity and aromatic power. Its rarity: it provides delicate aromas of laurel, hence its name. Manuel Formigo, a winemaker with Galician roots, produces from the wonderful granitic soils of Ribeiro this Cholo wine, deep and aromatically faithful to the variety.
CLOS DE SANJUAN 2019
ZONE: DOP UTIEL-REQUENA
VARIETY: BOBAL
Although for its fruitiness and delicate texture, it has been very fashionable for some years now, not everyone knows that the Bobal variety has been the ugly duckling of the Manchegan and Mediterranean varieties for decades. Its high production yield, thousands of kilos per hectare, made it the ideal grape for making millions of liters of bulk wine without soul or character. Fortunately, a few wineries saw the other side of a variety that, when well vinified, produces fleshy wines with great aromatic expression. The small Sanjuán winery produces this delicious Clos of exquisite elegance from a vineyard that is more than sixty years old. It is matured in raw cement tanks, and finishes the aging in French oak barrels to provide extra finesse and complexity.
CIEN MONTAÑAS ALBARÍN NEGRO 2019
ZONE: DOP CANGAS
VARIETY: ALBARÍN NEGRO
VidAs is one of the few wineries that make up the small Designation of Origin Cangas, in the Principality of Asturias. A region of the so-called heroic viticulture, due to the steepness of the slopes on which its vineyards grow with slopes of more than 30%. A landscape as beautiful as it is difficult to work for the winegrower. And it is in this transition zone between Castile, Galicia, and the Cantabrian Sea, where we find local varieties such as Albarín Negro, perfectly adapted to an area of difficult viticulture. The combination of ninety-year-old vines and black slate soils creates this wonderful wine, juicy, light in the mouth, and full of fruity and mineral aromas.
